John Peel was one of the UK's most-loved broadcasters
Veteran BBC broadcaster John Peel has died at the age of 65, while on holiday in Peru.

Peel, whose radio career spanned 40 years, was on a working holiday in the city of Cuzco with his wife Sheila when he suffered a heart attack.

He was BBC Radio 1's longest-serving DJ and in recent years had also presented Home Truths on Radio 4.

Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said Peel's contribution to modern music and culture was "immeasurable".

'Hugely missed'

He added: "John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death as are all who work at Radio 1. "John's influence has towered over the
development of popular music for nearly four decades.

Personally, I'm 27, have only been living in England for last 10 years, but got to love and respect this man. His shows have always been interesting, always at a cutting edge of new and just different music. Very sad and shocking nesws. R.I.P John, you will surely be missed.

The man introduced the world to some brilliant music. I have some of the John Peel session recordings from various bands and I'm very happy UK radio had him and hopefully still has people like him. That's why I love listening to Radio 4 in the UK but can't stand 99% of American radio that play the same 8 songs throughout the day.
cheers

Wow this really makes me happy, I was expecting UK people to reply and US people not to take much interest in this, but I'm glad that you heard of him and know about him and, although Peel will be missed and it'd be vry difficult to replace him, well impossible really, there are other DJs that are good in their own way, like zain low, Giles peterson, John Kenedy, Ian Canfield, James Hymon, Eddy Temple Morris and others, yes probablly none of them are same like him, all of them promote different type of music, but the thing that all of them have in common is that they're different, they know hell of a lot about music and neither of them play your same top 40 songs over and over again and all of them got very eclectic music taste, which they show in their programs. Again, John will be missed, but long live UK radio and it's unique music shows.

I have a couple of the peel sessians as well, notably Napalm Death, and now with this sad news all those recordings just became collecter's items, and I was able to find the recordings I have from off the rack in a little store in Vancouver called Track Records, so there you go!

I was very fortunate to work with John Peel five years ago when doing the young citizens' passport CD, which he introduced. He is one of those people who's as much a pillar of British broadcasting as Brian Johnston, Peter Jones or Kenny Everet were, and I'm really saddned to see this news. Thanks for alerting us to it, Internet King.
